What we can actually do

A capability statement for buyer procurement files: where we source, what we produce ourselves, how we hold stock, and what we can put our name to.

The business

Global Supermarket is the trading arm of VANA Africa, based at 1827 37 St SE in southeast Calgary. We operate on both sides of the counter: a working retail grocery and halal butcher serving Calgary’s Ethiopian, Eritrean and wider African communities, and a wholesale operation supplying distributors, independent grocers and food service.

That combination is the commercial argument. We see which lines move, at what price, in a real store — before recommending them to a distributor who has to sell them on.

Fill these in before sending this page to a buyer. Years trading, warehouse area and monthly volume are the first three things a procurement team looks for. They are marked as to-be-confirmed rather than guessed.

Sourcing network

Origins are confirmed per line on every quotation and stated on the certificate of origin.

Why buy from Calgary, not direct from origin

It is the fair question, and any buyer with volume should ask it. Buying at origin is cheaper per unit. Here is what you give up, and when it is worth it anyway.

Direct from EthiopiaThrough us, from Calgary

Buy direct when you move full containers of a single line, have your own customs and labelling capability, and can carry 90-day lead times.

Buy through us when you want the whole range in one shipment, need label-compliant stock, are testing lines before committing, or want a supplier in the same country and time zone when something goes wrong.

Own production

Four of our lines are made in Calgary rather than bought in, which means we control specification, packaging format and lead time:

  • Injera — baked daily, teff blend or 100% teff, retail packs and catering quantities.
  • Shiro — chickpeas roasted and milled to order, mild and spiced grades.
  • Berbere and mitmita — blended from imported spice to our own recipe.
  • Niter kibbeh and awaze — produced in retail jars and food-service formats.

Private label

Available on shiro, berbere, mitmita, awaze and niter kibbeh. Artwork, packaging format and minimum runs are agreed per line. For the Canadian market, labels must carry bilingual English and French text, a Nutrition Facts table, an ingredient list, allergen declaration and country of origin — we will not ship non-compliant artwork.

Warehousing & handling

  • Ambient dry storage with pest control for grain, pulses and spice.
  • Chilled and frozen capacity for meat lines, under logged temperature control.
  • Segregated halal handling with dedicated equipment at the butcher counter.
  • Pallet-level lot coding, so any case can be traced to its intake.

Who we supply

Independent grocers, restaurants and caterers across Alberta, plus distributors placing container volume. Add named references — two or three named accounts, with permission, will do more work on this page than any amount of copy.
